Attention Teachers: Have you included one of my books on a required or suggested reading list? If so, first of all, thank you! I am so excited that teachers are using my books in schools instead of some of the dry stuff I had to read as a teenager. You will definitely want to check out the Reading Group Guides section. But first, there is one other important thing you will need to do . . . .
Since my books haven't yet reached the "modern classic" status of, say, The Great Gatsby, there are not necessarily piles and piles of them at your local bookstore. This is as shocking to me, as it is to you, but it is possible that if 200 students converge upon your local Borders store, looking for Breathing Underwater, at least a few of them might be disappointed. In my community every summer, for example, there are usually close to 100 holds on Breathing Underwater in the public library system which only has 13 copies. How can you prevent this? Simple. Please contact your local booksellers and library ahead of time and tell them that you have assigned the book and how many students you think might want it. My publisher informs me that all of my books are currently in print. So stores should be able to order them pretty quickly. In this way, when students rush into the bookstore 2 days before the book report is due, they will still be able to find the book.
